14187031_mIf you have been working in the same job for years or if you are about to embark on a new role, you should know your value in the market place and you should assess your salary.

Many industries have a standard salary, depending on your qualifications, expertise and work experience. There are a number of ways you can research your industry value;

Attending networking events can help you to meet industry contacts. By networking with professionals in your industry and building rapport, you should be able to decipher what the average salary is and where you are in the pay scale.

Use the Internet

The internet is a valuable tool for finding out information and careers advice. Use Google to search for companies in your area or local businesses. Use social sites like Linked In to network as the more people and businesses you know, the more likely you are to find out salary information. You can also look at job descriptions and vacancies that match your current role and see what salary they are offering in the advert.

Look at Your Own Work History

By looking at your own CV template you should be able to figure out what salary you are happy with, regardless of the industry standard. Assess your living costs and previous salaries to find the right amount for you.

If you have done all of these checks and you find out you have been paid less, you should approach your employer and arrange a meeting. Usually annual meetings allow for you to bring up topics like wages however you should be able to arrange one when needed.
