The main point of a CV is to entice the employer to want to find out more. You don’t want to tell them everything before they have even invited you to interview! As well as keeping it concise, ensure you spell check for grammar and spelling mistakes. Having a well written CV, free of spelling mistakes will show that you are prepared, thorough and place importance on attention to detail. Including key skills and relevant work experience is crucial and ensure you draw attention to these – either by making the text bold or by placing them higher up the CV.


The layout of your CV is vital. Imagine an employer receives thousands of CVs in one week. They all look the same – white paper, black text. It starts to become tiresome to get through the ever-growing pile until they spot a shiny, unique CV amongst the rest. It’s laid out professionally, the writing is spaced well and is easy to read and it has a bit of colour. This new CV layout is likely to excite the employer and make them want to read on! This is why CV layout is so important. Highlighting the CV and covering it in images isn’t necessary to draw attention to it. Instead focus on laying it out professionally using guidelines and refer to other CV templates for inspiration.


Offering references on your CV template can really strengthen its content and support any work experience and projects mentioned on your CV. On some occasions you may find yourself wanting to leave references out – especially ones from your current employer. But including quotes from previous employers and work colleagues if possible can be really powerful. Consider using quotes throughout your CV template, to support specific content. Personal references can also be beneficial as you need the employer to know what kind of person you are in the work place and also what your personality can bring to their organisation. Including a mix of professional and personal references will further support your application and will definitely improve your CV template.
