Although you may need to tailor your CV depending on the company, most employers will not have time to read through pages and pages of CV writing. So when you are creating your CV consider limiting the content to one or two pages. The content needs to be concise – you need to get to your point as quickly as possible. An employer, on average, will scan your CV for thirty seconds before deciding whether or not to stay on it. So you need to make relevant skills and work experience easily accessible and don’t waffle!

Relevant Work Experience

You should order your work experience in date order but if there is a particular job you have worked at that is very similar or requires the same skills as the one you are applying for, highlight it. You need to draw attention to relevant work experience and skills so the employer can visualise how you will fit in to their organisation.

Compelling Personal Statement

Writing a good personal statement is crucial. Personal statements give an employer an insight into your personality and work ethic. When writing a personal statement you should include your key skills and hint at your personality and motivations. An employer will usually be looking for a candidate that will fit well with their working culture and atmosphere so be sure to do your research on the organisation before writing the personal statement and try and tailor it. It is crucial that you are honest in the personal statement too – there is no point lying about the type of employee you are as this will affect your enjoyment at work and will hinder your career progression.

Career Objective

A career objective can be hard to write, especially if you are applying to an industry you haven’t got much experience in or don’t necessarily want to progress in. But you should try and personalise your career objective to tie in with the job you are applying for. Keep it concise – a career objective should only be a paragraph of text. Content should include your aspirations for the future and any professional aims you want to (or already have) achieved.


Including references on your CV can really help to boost your chances of securing a job interview. References add strength to your CV and credibility. You can also use reference quotes and content throughout your CV to support any statements you make about project and work successes. If you are unable to supply your current employer as a reference, ensure you contact other references that can comment on your work in the industry.
