How to Plan a Career

22638125_mWhether you have just left education and are looking to start your career or you are simply looking for a change – planning your career is a must if you want to have career progression. Here are some tips on how to plan a career.

Find a Career

The first thing you should do is to think long and hard about what kind of career you are looking for. It is impossible to have a career plan if you don’t know what industry you want to work in. You may also work in several different jobs if you don’t focus on an industry, which ultimately makes it harder to work in a specific sector. Try and plan your career path – what kind of job do you want to do? What kind of work do you enjoy? What career progression are you looking for? By answering some questions you will gain direction.

Assess Your Skills

Assess your skills to find out what are your strengths and weaknesses. Concentrating on your key skills will not only help you to demonstrate them during a job interview but it could also give you an idea of what career may suit you.

Work Experience

Whether this is your first ever job or you are simply trying to change careers, you should try and gain work experience in your chosen field. This will help you to determine whether it’s the right role for you. Contact local companies and attend networking events. Although internships may be unpaid, they can lead to full-time work and can be really beneficial when planning a career jump.

Next you need to update your CV template. Try and mention all of your relevant work experience and key skills.

Cover Letters

Write a cover letter for each job you apply for. It is crucial that each job application is different because this ensures you personalise it for the employer. You should mention why you are the right candidate for the job and inject a bit of personality.
